Core is a simple and neat javascript library created by Kevin Yank and Cameron Adams to help beginners learn javascript.
This library was released along with the “Simply Javascript” book (published by SitePoint).
I have read that book and I must say that this book is the best book for beginners I have ever read! Kevin and Cameron have an amazing writing style and you’ll have no sleep until you haven’t finished reading this book! From the first pages you’ll realize the final purpose of this book: creating unobtrusive scripting!
“
As I explained previously in Simply JavaScript: How Simple is Too Simple? this
book takes a unique approach by teaching unobtrusive scripting from the very first
page. It achieves this by using its very own JavaScript library—the Core library—to
hide some of the nitty gritty details of JavaScript event handling and other cumbersome
tasks until the reader is up to speed. And now it’s my pleasure to make this library
available to everyone—not just owners of the book.
“
By creating your websites in an unobtrusive way you’ll not only create better websites, you’ll also create accessible websites (which, by the way, is a very important aspect you should be taking care of when developing websites).
I won’t go into too much details now, maybe in an other article. As I said, I liked that library (even if it (had) has just 5 main functions) so much that I decided to extend it. And I spend the last 2 months adding more functions into it.
I’m almost done, and all I have to do now is to verify it again and create the wiki. It was a nice ride although it is not complete! More functions and Modules are waiting to be implemented! All I can tell you about it right now, is that the new Core library has now 12 new Objects:
- Ajax,
- Browser,
- Cookie,
- DateTime,
- DOM,
- Form,
- Keyboard,
- Media,
- Text,
- Util,
- Validation,
- Window,
and 6 Modules:
- Accordion,
- AlternateAdsBanner,
- ModalBox,
- PageClock,
- TabControl,
- Slideshow.
All of them are fully functional and have been tested in the following browsers:
FireFox 2.0,
Internet Explorer 6.0 and 7.0,
Safari 2.0,
Opera 9.23,
on a Microsoft Windows platform with Windows Vista OS.
I will let you all know when this new library will be available for download.
Until then, stay tuned!
