Building your website with AJAX is a strict no-no if you want it to be crawled all over and indexed by all search engines. This is a fairly common piece of SEO advice known to most website designers. Websites created using AJAX have a lock and bolt when it comes to search engine crawling.
Google formally announced a proposal on the seventh of this month at the SMX East conference to come out with a new standard that could even make AJAX crawlable. If this proposal gains the acceptance of all including other major search engines, then this could be the green signal most developers were waiting for as they can now create websites using the rich features of AJAX technology without having to sacrifice on the visibility of the search engine.
All the details of this latest proposal from Google can be found on the site’s blog post. To sum up Google’s long term goals in creating this new standard is: only minimalistic changes are required with the growth of the website and both the users and search engines can view the same content. With this new proposal, users can be directly sent to the AJAX URL and not to any static copy. It also becomes possible for website owners to verify the content of the AJAX site and confirm that the crawler has access to all its content.
Google believes that approximately seventy percent of the entire content on the web is created dynamically, a figure that is definitely going to grow in the coming years. According to Google, this could hurt Search and hence something has to be done about AJAX crawlability or progress on the web could be thwarted. If you are interested in providing feedback about this proposal, you can now do so on the Google Webmaster Central Help Forum.
