Google shifted its ads closer to the free listings rather noiselessly some time in early August of this year. Most people assumed that this was done to draw more attention to the ads, an assumption that turned out to be very true.
In the question and answer session that followed after Google bought out its Q3 financial report, Jonathan Rosenberg confirmed the fact that moving the ads closer to the free listings has indeed caused a direct increase in the ‘click-through rate on the right hand side ads.’
To summarize his comments:
Jonathan reported that Google had an extremely successful financial quarter from the Ad Quality’s perspective. One of the most significant moves done by the website was the UI tweaks that were done for the search pages. The site also bought changes to the maximum width thereby minimizing the space between the search results and the right hand side ads when displayed on the wide screen. This one change bought about a significant increase in the click-through rate on the ads that come on the right hand side; he also said that this change was bought about by the website around the second week of August.
Some other enhancements and improvements were also bought about to the ads like site links that allow additional links for users to categorize and search for deeper advertisers of a site. This allows more information to be visualized when a search query is carried out which drastically improved the click-through rates.
The other improvement that was done was displaying more goods at the good ads and also expanded match. But he said that Google is not too sure of the percentage of difference that this change has resulted in and all the significant changes were made around the middle of August of this year.
