Google and the plaintiff parties have been given one month period ending on November 9th of this year to revise the settlement of the Book Search lawsuit; they have been asked to come up with solutions to all the objections raised by the United States Justice Department.
Google is of the opinion that the time frame given is way too small considering the wide array of objections that the settlement has received. Paul Aiken of the Author’s Guild, one of the companies which initially sued Google, recently commented in a New York Time’s article that though the core agreement shall remain the same, there are a few minor changes that Google has to make to satisfy everybody.
Many others who have also objected to various clauses of the settlement believe that the timeline given to Google is very small considering the amounts of changes that has to be made. Pamela Samuelson commented that there is simply no time to react and respond to all the serious objections that have been pointed out.
Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt also spoke earlier this week to the media regarding the Book Search lawsuit. Brewster Kale of the Internet Archive retaliated back saying that Google is twisting its own statements to suit its best interests.
Brin also published an article in the New York Times this Thursday in which he addressed certain myths that have been associated with the Book settlement. He said that there is no clause in the agreement which states that other organizations or companies should not follow similar ventures.
In spite of all the war of words, there is very little time on each side to fine tune the settlement and a final hearing can be expected by late December of early January, once and for all ending the speculations surrounding the Search deal.
