You may be a biggie in the market with your flagship product on the verge of attaining goodwill status. But when you are setting your toe into an unknown territory you must be very sure as to what you are doing.
This is something that may not be said when it comes to Microsoft’s latest roll out, Bing. Microsoft’s move, to rob Google of its market share with its latest search engine, didn’t work since most users decided to stick with Google as their primary search engine. This was reported in a J.P Morgan report titled “Understanding the Impact of Bing on the Search Industry” wherein the response of Bing was determined from a survey of 763 adults.
The result; 98% will not be making Bing their primary search engine. But it is unfair to blame everything on Microsoft since over $80 million was budgeted towards promoting Bing. Just that it wasn’t channelized in an efficient manner which the J.P Morgan testifies to be true. 59% of the respondents had heard of Bing leaving out the large 41% of the internet community. Of the acceding respondents, some 42% had actually tried the search engine. This means that a mere 25% of all the respondents had actually given Bing a try but still this is not the number of people who prefer Bing as their first search option.
Microsoft’s ad campaign did reach people; only that it wasn’t enough to get them out of their Google confines. The effort from the users is said to be a mere exploring process that users do, when there is something new in the market, since there were no users who migrated from Google. They mainly came from AOL and Ask. Bing is only a month old and hence it is not possible to shun it with to the unsuccessful lot. The stakes are high and only time will tell whether Bing will actually be able to attain Google’s present dominance in the market.
