The newly launched Google Privacy Dashboard also called Google Dashboard allows users to have quicker access and more control over their personal information that is stored on the website’s databases. The new controls added to the Dashboard make it one-stop shop for the users to manage all their personal data along with the settings that are usually associated with the Google products that is used when a user signs in to his account.
Shuman Ghosemajumder who is Google’s Business Product Manager for Trust and Safety remarked that this venture was designed to protect their users’ trust and hence the website has decided to make their services more transparent. The new privacy controls offer more transparency to users who have been using Google products from a very long time.
Google Dashboard can be accessed through www.google.com/dashboard or by going to the Google Account page where there is a link provided under the Personal Settings saying ‘view data stored with this account.’ To access your account, you have to be first logged in and Google can request your login details a second time to ensure your identity as the information stored can be sensitive.
Though all the products are not currently added to the Dashboard, Ghosemajumder assures that this will soon be done in the coming weeks. The products that are currently included are Account and profile, Mobile sync, Web history, Shopping list, Blogger, iGoogle, Finance, Friend connect, Gmail, Docs, Orkut, Picasa, Voice, Contacts, Alerts, Calendar, YouTube, Tasks, Custom search engines, Reader, Latitude, Talk and Health.
The Google Dashboard can be called as a sister concern of the Data Liberation Front which was launched earlier to move data in and out of Google products. The new privacy controls is definitely a step towards silencing Google’s critics who are constantly voicing their displeasure over the privacy issues of the website.
