Google has always been famous for its special logos which are reminiscent of a particular holiday or occasion. But the ‘Flying saucer’ Google logo which appeared on September 5th ’09 which depicts one of the ‘Os’ out of Google being abducted by a UFO baffled many including me. What could be the logic behind the thought?
Clicking on the logo only throws up search results for the term ‘unexplained phenomenon’. But a search using ‘UFO Sept 5’ threw up some interesting answers.
The town of Exeter, New Hampshire, held its first UFO festival on Sept 5th of this year to commemorate the sighting of a famous UFO in this area on this day. Excerpts from Seacoastline.com:
Exeter’s out-of-the world community celebrated its first UFO festival last weekend to the astonishment of believers and skeptics alike.
Exeter and ufology has always been closely related ever since Norman Muscarello sighted a hovering spacecraft which had five red flashing lights in 1965. When word spread around about this sighting, many similar stories began to do the rounds from different areas of the town. This incident was also reported in the UFO classic book titled ‘Incident in Exeter.’
A cryptic message was also tweeted by Google the very same day along with the logo:
1.12.12 25.15.21.18 15 1.18.5 2.5.12.15.14.7 20.15 21.19
When decoded, this reads ‘All your O are belong to us’ which is strikingly similar to ‘All your base are belong to us’ theme that was famous during the early 2000s.
Google officials claim that the second ‘O’ is highly critical to their brand recognition and pronunciation and they are seriously looking into the mysterious tweet that seems to have appeared on the Google twitter and the disappearance of the second ‘O’ from the logo on the homepage.
Since it is Google’s 11th birthday this month, there are many who think that this play-up is probably birthday-related and the real reason behind the logo will emerge soon.
The Telegraph reported that the reason behind the logo is that Sept 5th was the 20th anniversary of the computer game ‘Zero Wing’ from which the phrase ‘All your base are belong to us’ was obtained.
Meanwhile there was also a blog post from Google Korea which mentioned to watch out for the next logo on Sept 15th which could dwell on ‘mystery, invisible and novel.’ Many assume that this could relate to the famous book ‘The Invisible Man’ by H. G. Wells whose birthday falls on the 21st of this month.
Yet another explanation is from TechCrunch; they relate the logo to the O Campaign for cancer prevention.
